To the Almighty – For guiding and protecting my Sonshine since the day he was born. For helping our family deal with his share of illnesses through his life. The mild illnesses as well as the scary ones. For the long and healthy life, he is blessed with and that we could celebrate his fifth birthday yesterday.
For my amazing daughter and husband, who helped me make yesterday special for my little one. From making and decorating his class’ cupcakes and packing party packets, to unpacking and assembling his Hot Wheels track at 10pm last night, just so he could have one race before falling into bed from tiredness.
For the small intimate “happy birthday” we sang when he woke up, then I made him his favourite breakfast: eggs and sausage with toast, and he ate his birthday cupcake. He hunted around the house looking for his little dinosaur toys and played with them afterwards at the breakfast table.
For the little kids in his class – he calls them his friends. We took him to school and walked in with cupcakes with miniature dinosaurs on top. The friends in class were beside themselves with excitement. My Sonshine was his normally cool and calm self. Not phased by all the commotion his classmates made. Thank you for being friends with my boy.
For work – I work at a place where my hours are flexible and my compensation allows me to purchase a “big gift” for my Sonshine. We picked him up at 12:30 and took him shopping for his big gift – the Hot Wheels track!
For family and friends – Their messages and phone calls and status updates are appreciated.
For my support system – Who ensured my Sonshine has a homemade birthday cake, lots of presents and food to eat for all the guests who came to visit him. And then for doing these things for him (and his sister) every day even when it’s not his birthday – like picking him up from school, buying him toys, and just spoiling him in general. To my aunt, uncle and their two sons, thank you, thank you, thank you for being there for me and my kids!
For friends who became like family – Thank you for taking time out of your busy day to spend an evening visiting with us. We have grown to love and appreciate all of you and the wonderful things you do.
For amazing in-laws – because you waited up until after 9:30 for us to visit you last night. Then you sang Happy Birthday to him, twice. Just so he could enjoy being sung to five times on his 5th birthday. And for all the gifts and love he receives from all of you unconditionally.
“ ‘Thank you’ is the best prayer that anyone could say. I say that one a lot. Thank you, expresses extreme gratitude, humility, understanding.” —Alice Walker
I may not have had a massive party to celebrate my son’s life but he told me last night, “This was the best birthday ever, mommy” and that was enough assurance that he is grateful for me and for the things I mentioned above.
What are you grateful for today?
